Replacing a Lost License in Florida

A lost Florida driver license, learner permit, or identification (ID) card means you cannot legally drive and you've lost your main source of photo identification; a stolen license or ID means you're at risk for identity theft.

Florida REAL ID Licenses

The Florida DHSMV began issuing federally-compliant REAL ID driver’s licenses in 2010. REAL IDs allow you to use your license for domestic travel and entry into federal and military buildings. For details on FL REAL IDs, see the DHSMV's guide and FAQs.

If you DO NOT already have a REAL ID, the replacement process varies slightly.

Driver

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) recommends reporting your lost license or ID card and applying for a replacement as soon as possible.

Report Your Missing License or ID

Though not required, the state strongly recommends that you report your stolen driver's license or identification card to the DHSMV and law enforcement. When you report a stolen license, you're eligible for a free replacement; but more importantly, the police report helps protect you against identity theft under Florida law.

Before you apply for a replacement:

  • Report the theft to law enforcement.
    • An officer will provide you with a copy of the police report. Keep this—with a police report, your replacement will be free (as long as you aren't changing your information).
  • Bring the police report to your driver license office.
    • You may be required to provide other documents proving your identity, SSN, and residency. Contact your driver's license office before visiting to determine your exact requirements.

Identity Fraud and Your FL License or ID

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud due to the loss of your license or ID, you'll need to complete an Identity Theft/Driver License Fraud Report (Form HSMV 72068). Bring the form to the DHSMV, along with 2 documents proving your identity, when you apply for a replacement driver's license or ID card.

Reporting your stolen license does more than just save you a few bucks; it also helps prevent someone from stealing your identity. Learn more about protecting your identity on the DHSMV identity theft page.

How to Replace Your FL License or ID

Form

You can replace your lost Florida license, permit, or ID card online or in person. If you're a non-immigrant or if you are interested in upgrading your ID with one that is REAL ID-compliant, then you must apply in person.

Alternatively, you can go ahead and renew your license or ID if you are within 18 months of the expiration date.

NOTE: Replacing a learner's permit is the same process as replacing a driver's license, and minors don't need parental signatures to apply for duplicate permits or licenses.

Online

You can order your replacement driver's license or ID card at GoRenew.com, Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles official online portal for various license and registration transactions.

IMPORTANT: Non-REAL ID-compliant licenses

If you currently have a non-compliant ID card, and are looking to renew or replace with a REAL ID, you will NOT be able to do so online. See our instructions for replacing in person at your local licensing office.

To apply for a duplicate license online:

  • Visit GoRenew.com.
  • Select what you'll provide as your primary form of identification. You can provide your:
    • Driver license or ID number.
    • FL license plate number.
    • Vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Provide your date of birth and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number.
  • Pay the applicable fee using a VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express debit or credit card to pay the following fees:
    • Replacement license: $25
    • Replacement ID card: $25

The GoRenew system will guide you from there.

You won't receive a receipt to use as a temporary license, but you should receive your permanent replacement license within a couple of weeks.

In Person

Replacing a lost Florida license or ID in person involves a few more requirements, but the DHSMV recommends it because you get your duplicate license immediately. Once you follow the below steps to replace your ID, you will be issued one that is REAL ID-compliant.

You'll apply at your local driver license office:

  • Make an appointment if your local office allows this option (most do).
  • Present documents* proving identification and residency, including:
    • 1 document for identification.
    • 1 document with your Social Security number and name.
    • 2 documents showing residency* (faxes and computer printouts are accepted).
    • Change of name documents (if you've legally changed your name).
  • Pay the applicable fee with a personal check or money order:
    • Replacement license: $25
    • Replacement ID card: $25
    • Tax Collector office service fee: $6.25.

*The FLDHSMV website has full lists of acceptable documents for each requirement depending on your citizenship status:

  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Immigrant.
  • Non-Immigrant.
  • Canadian.

Out-of-State or Overseas License Replacement

If you need to replace a lost Florida license while out of state, you'll need to follow the instructions above for online replacement.

If there are any issues with doing so, call the DHSMV at (850) 617-2000 as soon as possible and provide the information listed above to an agent.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen CDL in FL

Because CDLs follow a different eligibility and application process, it's best to call your local DHSMV office for details on how to replace a lost or stolen Florida commercial driver's license and whether you can do so online.

License

Also, don't forget to ask about replacement fees. Drivers with endorsements should plan to pay more than they would for a straight CDL replacement.
